Abstract
Platelet serotonin levels were significantly lower in pellagrins with mental depression as compared to normal subjects, as well as pellagrins whose mental status was apparently normal. While niacin improved the clinical manifestations, the serotonin levels in platelets decreased further. It is suggested that niacin perhaps facilitates the release of free serotonin and promotes its action at the receptor sites. The mechanism of action of nicotinic acid needs further study.
