Abstract

The pattern of growth of the unicellular blue-green alga Anacystis nidulans in gradually increasing concentrations of sodium selenate and chloramphenicol during successive subcultures was studied. An increase in tolerance to sodium selenate of about twelve times occurred during ten transfers of the alga in increasing concentrations of the drug. The tolerance was partially lost after the resistant cells had been given the same number of transfers in a selenate-free medium.
