Abstract

The I.R. spectra of U(BH4)4 at low temperatures and its Raman spectra in the solid state and in solutions have been obtained. Combining this data with those for borohydrides and deuterides of Zr and Hf, taken from literature, a satisfactory normal coordinate analysis is carried out. Complete assignments of all the observed bands, frequency values of inactive modes, and isotope shifts on 235U substitution could thus be obtained. It is also shown that some of the strong bands in Hf(BD4)4 and Zr(BD4)4 assigned by earlier workers as Fermi resonance doublets actually arise from inactive modes which become active on incomplete deuteration.
