Abstract

The mean and the standard deviation of the prompt gamma-ray multiplicity distribution in spontaneous fission of 252Cf have been measured as a function of the charge ratio of the fission fragment pairs. While the variation of the mean multiplicity as a function of charge ratio is found to be nearly structureless, the standard deviation exhibits considerable variations. A statistical model analysis of the data was carried out to determine the contribution of the initial spin distribution widths of the fission fragments to the observed standard deviation of the gamma-ray multiplicity distribution.
