Abstract
210 hyperfragments, produced in interactions of 3.5 GeV/c pions with emulsion nuclei have been analysed in detail. The results provide strong evidence that an appreciable fraction (≥ 35% ) of short hyperfragments (ranges ≤ 10 µm) have masses ≤ 50 times that of a nucleon. The ratio of nonmesonic to π--mesonic decays in found to be ≤ 1.4 for He hyperfragments, ~12 for Li hyperfragments and ~140 for short hyperfragments. The decay of A via a virtual Σ-state appears to be important.
