Abstract
The binary-encounter collision model for ionization of atoms by proton impact proposed by Gerjuoy and Vriens is extended to the problem of proton-impact excitation of a neutral atom from the ground state. We have calculated the proton-excitation cross sections from the ground state of a helium atom to the n1S (n=2-5), n1P (n=2-5), and n1D (n=3,4) states using a d function as well as a quantal-momentum distribution function for the target electrons. The calculated cross sections are compared with other theoretical calculations and the measured values.
