Achieving gender equality in Haryana: Sensitising men to enable women

Abstract

Violence against women and girls is a pertinent social issue. In India, gender-based violence and discrimination are results of deep rooted patriarchal norms and historically unequal power relationship between men and women [Bamal, (2014), p.9]. In Haryana, a north-western province of India, the issue of gender disparity is quite critical. The state has a dismal record on gender issues, though its economic growth is quite appreciable with the highest per capita income in India (Economic Survey of India 2015–16). Gender equity and equality can boost the growth further. The paper recommends a modern approach with a concerted advocacy strategy that diligently uses mass media and the social media. This can multiply the impact of existing statutory provisions and women welfare schemes. Strong leadership and institutional support is necessary for effective and successful implementation. Suggested policy entails sustained focus, regular review and flexible approach.
