Abstract
Fabrication techniques for fused silica fiber suspensions often result in nonuniform fiber diameters. We report the results of a model showing that the mechanical losses of a nonuniform fiber suspension can be twice those of the corresponding uniform fiber case, and suggest some techniques to reduce the level of nonuniformities.
