Abstract

SU(3) gauge theory with 4 and 8 light, dynamical flavours is simulated on an 83 × 4 lattice using the staggered fermions and the pseudo-fermion method. A comparison of the results with those obtained previously by using the microcanonical method reveals good quantitative agreement. A first-order phase transition is confirmed at ma = 0.1 in the 8-flavour case, although at a slightly higher value of the temperature.
