Abstract
Worldwide research is being carried out on the chemically inert and low cost materials as materials of construction for use in chemical process industries. Some of the new materials have already been introduced in the process industries. Among the newly introduced materials polymers and their composites are being used as materials for piping, pumps, unfired-pressure vessels, storage tanks, gaskets, membranes, etc. The specificities of such materials are: corrosion resistance, high strength and modulus values compared to their density, acceptable deformability, resistant to heat, electricity and water. Tailored design and excellent formability enable the fabrication of newer equipment and the structural rehabilitation of the existing components made of traditional materials. The polymeric materials perform better and provide flexibility in design and fabrication of plants. In this article, discussion has been made on the engineering properties and application areas of polymers, namely, Rubbers (Elastomers), Thermoplastics, Thermosets (Thermosetting resins) and Polymeric composites. Design aspects for fabrication of equipment and accessories in process industry using polymeric materials have also been discussed.
