Abstract

Absolute rate constants of propagation for ion pairs in the carbocationic polymerization of p-chlorostyrene were determined. The living cationic polymerization of p-ClSt was obtained by both the p-MeStCl/TiCl 4 and p-ClStCl/TiCl 4 initiating system in the MeCHx/MeCl 60/40 (v/v) solvent mixture at -80°C. The UV-spectroscopic measurements allowed the determination of kinetic parameters for the capping reaction of p-ClStCl with DTE. The propagation step in the cationic polymerization of p-ClSt was essentially diffusion limited on the basis of competition experiments and UV-spectroscopic measurements.
