Abstract
The characteristics of coupled polarization transfer (PT) spectra are investigated by employing the product operator formalism. The analysis is performed for PT from spin-1 to spin- nuclei, and from spin- to spin-1 nuclei, treating two- and three-spin systems. Explicit expressions are derived for the overall enhancement factors and the detailed form of the signals, including the effects of misset pulse intervals and a spread in the value of the spin-spin coupling constant. It is found that PT between spin-1 and spin- nuclei exhibits quite different characteristics depending on which is the polarization source. It is concluded that, in general, PT between spin-1 and spin- nuclei gives rise to spectra which are more strongly subject to the anomalies that are associated with coupled PT spectra involving only spin- nuclei. The improved PT techniques which have been proposed and employed in the latter case are shown to be only partially successful in the two situations under study.
