Abstract
Experimental observations on the interaction of intense electron beams with magnetically confined plasmas, when the beam has a substantial component of the velocity in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field are summarised. The interaction takes place in two stages; in the first stage the response is essentially magnetic due to return currents induced in the plasma, in the second stage, those currents decay converting energy into plasma heating. Observation of fast magnetic field diffusion point to beam-induced turbulence in the plasma.
