Abstract
3-phenylsulfonyl 1,2 propane diol, readily obtainable by dihydroxylation of commercially available allylphenylsulfone, acts as an efficient and new protection reagent for both aldehydes and ketones. This protective group is elegantly removed by use of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-7-undecene (DBU), under nonaqueous conditions. A new protective group for carbonyl compounds cleavable under nonaquous basic condition is reported.
