Abstract

Energy levels associated with the torsional oscillations of ammonium ion in NH4Cl have been studied using neutron inelastic scattering techniques. The split observed in the scattered neutron group and the temperature variation of the intensities have been interpreted in terms of the anharmonicity of the potential. Comparison with the theory of Gutowsky, Pake and Bersohn shows that the potential is more anharmonic than assumed by these authors.
