Abstract

The saturated small ring azaheterocycle aziridine and its unsaturated analogue azirine are versatile intermediates and reaction partners for the synthesis of structurally and functionally diverse heterocyclic compounds. These privileged structures have drawn significant attention of organic chemists due to their inherent ring-strain enabling them for a variety of ring-opening, ring-expansion, and rearrangement reactions. In view of the aforementioned properties and importance of the small ring heterocycles in organic synthesis, this article depicts a literature survey of the last decade for the synthesis of three-membered aza-heterocycles and their regio- and stereoselective ring-opening/expansion reactions towards four- to seven-membered heterocyclic compounds.
