Abstract

151Eu-Mossbauer and magnetic susceptibility measurements on EuIr2Si2 suggest that this material is an intermediate valent system. Variation of average valence V̅ is very much pronounced compared to EuCu2Si2; V̅ = 2.3 and 2.8 at 300K and 4.2K respectively. Excitation energy, Eex = (E2+g - E3+g) and the spin fluctuation temperature, Tsf, are strongly temperature dependent.
