Abstract
This paper proposes a kurtosis driven variable learning adaptive filter for mitigation of power quality problems in the distribution system. It is used as a control algorithm for a VSC (Voltage Source Converter) based DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Compensator) with self sustaining dc bus. It is tested for the compensation of reactive power, neutral current, harmonics and balancing of linear and nonlinear loads. It is employed for extraction of active and reactive power components of load currents which are major components in estimation of reference supply currents. In this algorithm, variable learning rate is achieved without any supervision. The DSTATCOM system is modeled in MATLAB/simulink software. Performance of proposed control algorithm of DSTATCOM is analyzed under steady state and dynamic conditions with satisfactory response.
