Abstract

This paper proposes a low conduction loss Vienna converter for power factor correction and to reduce the harmonic content in the AC mains current for a variable speed induction motor drive. It also enables DC bus capacitor voltage balancing and regulates the DC link voltage. A three-phase, three-level, boost-type Vienna converter having six-switches and two capacitors at the DC link is used at the front end of the drive which possesses a mid-point at the DC bus making it more suitable for the neutral point clamped three-level voltage source inverter. A space vector modulated field oriented control algorithm is used for controlling the motor side three-level inverter. The drive system is simulated using MATLAB/ Simulink and analyzed for different steady state and dynamic speed and load torque perturbations. The harmonic performance of the drive is evaluated for different load torques right from light load to full load and found to be excellent.
