Abstract
Organic solid state reactions have now entered the chemical mainstream. During the past, the study of these reactions was initiated and formalised and the topochemical principle elaborated. The present is characterised by intense activity in many laboratories and by the development and growth of the subject of crystal engineering. As one looks to the future, one notes the ever-growing concern with cleaner and greener chemistry — a concern that justifies the heightened awareness and interest in these reactions.
