Abstract
This study deals with the voltage control and power quality improvement of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based diesel generator (DG) set feeding single-phase loads using a solid-state controller. The proposed system consists of a PMSG driven by a diesel engine at constant speed, a three-leg voltage source converter (VSC) with a capacitor on its DC link and single-phase load connected between two terminals of the generator. Most of the domestic loads are single phase but three-phase generation is more reliable and efficient than single-phase generation. Therefore a three-phase PMSG is proposed for feeding such types of loads. The VSC is used as a solid-state controller to control the terminal voltage, to eliminate harmonics from the source currents and voltage and to provide load balancing while feeding single-phase loads from three-phase PMSG. An adaptive theory-based improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST)-based control algorithm with selectable frequency (ωo) and bandwidth (Δ) is used to estimate balanced reference source currents. The main contribution of this study is the power quality improvement of PMSG-based DG set using a solid-state controller along with hardware implementation of a novel ILST-based control algorithm for voltage control across the load.
