Abstract

'Metal Hydrides' are of significant importance for hydrogen storage based energy applications viz. automotives, heat pumps, refrigerators, thermal storage systems fuel cells, rechargable batteries etc, Intermetallic compounds offer excellent potential for use as hydrogen storage materials. An overview on the phenomenon of hydrogen in metals, the technological applications of metal hydrides and the salient features of various metal hydride systems that have been developed for different applications is given in this paper. The relative merits and demerits of these systems are critically analysed. The progress made so far nationally and internationally in the development of hydrogen storage materials is also reviewed.
