Abstract
In situ observations of electron density irregularities are reviewed, and an attempt is made to relate the irregularities to relevant plasma processes. Consideration is given to large scale irregularities (type I), irregularities due to cross field instability (type Mc and Sc), irregularities due to the streaming of electrons (type Ss), and irregularities due to neutral turbulence (type Mn and Sn).
