Abstract

A nitric oxide filled ion chamber with lithium fluoride window was used to measure the absorption profile of solar Lyman alpha radiation in the Earth's atmosphere on a rocket flight from Thumba during relatively undisturbed conditions on the Sun. The results were used to derive molecular oxygen concentrations in the 70–95 km region. The estimates show good agreement with the recent atmospheric model of Groves (1970) for heights above about 83 km but exhibit systematic departures from the model below this height.
