Abstract

Though the general patterns of distribution and seasonal variations of temperature and salinity of the inshore waters at Purakad are identical both in the mud bank region and the surroundings, during the months when the mud bank is active, the surface and subsurface waters in the mud bank show slightly greater dilution compared to the waters in the surrounding area. This dilution, which decreases from surface to subsurface waters and disappears at the bottom, is probably brought about by flows directed offshore, which carry low salinity water from the nearshore region.
