Abstract

Organic matter has been estimated in sediment samples collected from the continental shelf and slope regions along five dections normal to the distribution studied. The study has revealed that the sediments in the inner shelf and the continental slope are characterized by a higher content of organic matter while the sediments in the region in between are relatively poor in their organic matter content. The regional distribution of organic matter has been discussed in relation to the texture of the sediments and their distribution as well as upwelling and other factors.
