Abstract

THE protonema of the moss Funaria hygrometrica L., Sibth, has been extensively used to study the regulation of cellular differentiation1,2. Although normal caulonema cells are formed during the development of protonema on solid medium, very few or no caulonema cells are formed in liquid medium3, and consequently bud formation is reduced4. The initiation signal for caulonema formation is not known.
