Abstract

Mass spectral studies of diastereomeric dialkyl 2,3-dibromosuccinates reveal that interaction between the functional groups such as COOCH3 and Br is reflected in the abundance of various ions and this process can be rationalized based on the higher population of the most stable conformation of these molecules in the gas phase. However, the mass spectra of diastereomeric dialkyl 2,3-dimethylsuccinates are different since the spectra could not be correlated with their conformation and this indirectly suggests that the energy difference between the conformers may not be very high.
