Abstract

We study the effect of an impurity, either non-magnetic (spin S = 0) or magnetic (spin s=½ ), on the dynamics of a single hole in a strongly correlated coupled-chain (CC) model described by a t - J-type Hamiltonian. In the case of a non-magnetic impurity, we derive exact numerical and analytical results to show that the hole can form bound as well as antibound states with the impurity. In a certain range of J/t values, bound states of different symmetry coexist. In the case of the magnetic impurity, exact numerical results show that binding of the hole to the impurity is less favourable than in the case of non-magnetic impurity.
