Abstract

The effect of impeller diameter and location on the turbulent flow generated by the disc turbine was measured using a laser Doppler anemometer. The tank diameter was 500 mm with a flat bottom and provided with four T/10 baffles. The flow generated by a disc turbine was compared with four other designs of radial flow impellers, namely modified disc turbine, curved blade turbine, straight blade tubine and Brumagin impeller. The comparison is presented in terms of mean velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, flow number, hydraulic efficiency and pumping effectiveness.
