Abstract

The Mossbauer spectra have been obtained at room temperature for one synthetic and six natural ilmenite samples. Spectra for most of these samples have not been studied earlier. The isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings of the natural specimens are compared with the values obtained for the synthetic sample. On the basis of the Mossbauer spectra ilmenites of primary (igneous) origin could be distinguished from the secondary types. Using Mossbauer spectra the quantitative estimates of iron in these ores compares favourably with the standard chemical methods.
