Abstract

We present the extensive broad band UBVRI observations, using the 1.04m Sampurnanand Telescope at ARIES, of a bright type IIP supernova SN 2004et which appeared in a nearby galaxy NGC 6946. The supernova was monitored for approx470 days in the optical band with one observation in the radio wavelength at 1.4 GHz using the GMRT. SN 2004et shows a pronounced plateau of 110pm10 days in the V, R and I bands. The evolution of radius and temperature during the plateau phase is studied. We construct the bolometric light curve and compare it with other typical type IIP supernovae. The estimated mass of nickel ejected is 0.06 pm0.03. Other physical parameters such as the ejected mass, the pre-supernova radius and the explosion energy are also estimated. The flux density at 1.4 GHz is 1.24 pm0.24.
