Abstract

The neutron scattering cross section (density-correlation function) for a harmonic oscillator subject to small, frequent impulsive forces (Brownian motion) is calculated. We find that the impulse approximation is not correct in the limit that the momentum transfer approaches infinity, as there is no time scale on which the particle can be regarded as free.
