Abstract

A review with 62 references. Bonding in inorganic glasses is generally a mixed ionic-covalent type. In highly ionic glasses, intermediate-range order develops with the formation of clusters. In covalently bonded glasses, formation of charged defects plays a significant role in many glass properties. Covalency itself appears to increase in the glassy state. Examples of the consequences of the type of bonding on the structure and stability of glasses are discussed. Inherent glass-forming tendency in several inorganic compounds are discussed in terms of a chemical model.
