Abstract

The cage vibrational frequencies of Na+ ions in sodium borovanadate glasses have been examined using far-infrared spectroscopy. The glass transition temperature, Tg, is found to vary linearly with the cage vibrational frequency, ν . The variation of ν has been related to the average excess partial charge on the cage oxygen atoms and hence to the force constant. The observed linear variation of Tg as a function of ν has been rationalized on the basis of the cluster model of glass transition.
