Abstract

Blue light stimulated in vivo nitrate reductase activity in Oscillatoria princeps, but not in some other cyanobacteria tested. A typical rate of 0.5 µg NO2 - µg-1 Ch1 a at 12 h was obtained in incandescent light, and 2.25 µg NO2 - µg-1 Ch1 a in blue light. DCMU increased the activity of this enzyme in blue light as well as in incandescent light. The blue-light effect is specific to nitrate reductase activity and does not affect glutamine synthetase. The exact mechanism involved in blue-light-induced stimulation of nitrate reduction needs further study.
