Abstract

We examine the characteristics of the microspherical cavities and the associated whispering gallery modes with a view to study the optical characteristics of atoms in such cavities. In particular we report results on the renormalized response functions due to (a) very large enhancements of the internal fields and (b) the exceptionally large value of Q associated with certain chosen modes.
