Abstract

In this paper, we propose the use of the phenomenon of suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR) in the detection of a transient signal in a noisy environment. An SSR pre-processor consisting of an array of 2-level quantizers is used to boost the SNR of the data before being transformed by a translation invariant wavelet packet transform (TIWPT). The maximum magnitude coefficient of the TIWPT output is used as a test statistic. Simulation results show that this detector performs better than a detector using a stochastic resonance (SR) pre-processor with a TIWPT detector.
