Abstract

A study of the equatorial spread F, rocket measurement of nitric oxide and ozone in the tropical mesosphere, and investigations of nonlinear plasma processes and instabilities in space plasmas are summarized. The neutral dynamics and plasma physical mechanisms that lead to the generation of the irregularities and their spatial spectra are examined. An empirical model of the spectral distribution of the irregularities is developed. The relationship between the irregularity spectra and the propagation parameters of electromagnetic waves in the different frequency bands is analyzed.
