Abstract

The kinetics of γ-radiation-induced solution polymerization of methyl phenoxymethacrylate (MPMA) and methyl p-cresoxymethacrylate (MCMA) in toluene has been studied at 30 and 0°C and at dose rates of 0.3, 0.15, and 0.75 Mradh-1. The rates of polymerization, which were found to increase with increasing monomer concentration, have direct dependence on dose rate and [monomer] and have inverse dependence on [solvent]. The apparent energies of activation measured at 0.3 Mrad h-1 for MPMA and MCMA respectively are: 46.8 kJ mol-1 and 11.7 kJ mol-1. The polymerization proceeded in spite of the presence of the inhibitor p-hydroxyphenyl methyl ether (PHME). This suggests that the mechanism of polymerization may be predominantly ionic. A suitable reaction scheme has been proposed.
