Abstract

The oxidation of acetone and methylethylketone by ceric ions in perchloric acid solution has been studied at 25°, 30°, and 35°C. The kinetics of the reactions involved has been studied in detail with special reference to the nature of intiation of oxidation. The oxidation has been found to proceed with the formation of an intermediate complex between the Ce4+-ion and the ketone; the formation of the complex has been proved by an independent method. The active form for the ketones in the oxidation process has been assumed to be the enol form. Equilibrum constant for the complexes and the thermodynamic constants for the formation of the complexes have been determined.
