Abstract

Theoretical models for the observed high redshifts of QSOs are discussed. The fundamental principles of Doppler redshift, gravitational redshift, and cosmological redshift are reviewed; the evidence suggesting that the QSO redshifts are cosmological is summarized and found to be open to doubts; models based on Doppler or gravitational redshifts are surveyed; and the possibility of a new type of redshift based on the notion of steadily increasing particle masses in flat spacetime (Hoyle and Narlikar, 1972) is considered. Diagrams, graphs and photographs are provided, and the need for further development of the noncosmological redshift models and the construction of observational tests to evaluate them is stressed.
