Abstract
We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions that a real 4×4 matrix should satisfy in order that it qualifies to be the Mueller matrix of some linear system. These conditions when applied to the experimentally Mueller matrices of Howell [Appl. Optics 18 (1979) 809] lead to unexpected conclusions.
