Abstract

Carbon isotope measurements, carried out on carbonate samples from different localities of the early Proterozoic Aravalli Craton, Western India, yield positive δ 13C values up to +11.20%. PDB. This widespread, isotopically anomalous carbonate province, reported from this subcontinent, coincides with the appearance of stromatolites and the development of 'red beds'. These observations support a global paleoenvironment change during the Paleoproterozoic, as reported from other parts of Gondwanaland including the Kapvaal Craton, Africa, and the Sao Francisco Craton, Brazil.
