Abstract

In 1984, a major project for the development of a family of digital electronic exchanges specifically for use in the Indian network was undertaken. Imported telecommunication technology has not provided the right solution to the problems prevailing in the developing country. With the advent of semiconductor component technology, the availability of powerful software development tools and skilled manpower, a major project for the development of a family of digital switching systems was launched. The system's features and the hardware architecture of this system are described. A brief outline of the software issues involved and the production strategy are also given.
