Abstract

Many natural clays acquire the property of cross anisotropy due to the process of sedimentation followed by one-dimensional consolidation. In some other cases, due to rhythmic fluctuations in the conditions of deposition, a layered deposit could be formed, as in the case of a varved clay which has alternate layers of silt and clay.
