Abstract

The giant resonance region in 58Ni and 208Pb excited by inelastic scattering of 270 MeV helions has been studied up to 40 MeV excitation energy in these nuclei. An empirical procedure for continuum background subtraction has been proposed which leads to a more consistent analysis of the giant-resonance structures. Collective-model calculations reproduce the angular-distribution data for the various multipoles reasonably well.
