Abstract

The formation of braids, kinks and filaments in Saturn's rings is shown to be a consequence of the electromagnetic equilibrium of moving charged grains, where the electrostatic pressure on the grain is balanced by the `pinch pressure' due to the dust ring current. The stability of such equilibria may be a dynamic process critically dependent on local plasma conditions prevailing in the ring.
