Abstract
The effect of dielectric tapering on the extraction efficiency of a Cerenkov Free Electron Laser is investigated. A self consistent dynamical model in terms of the electron energy and the radiation phase is developed. From numerical simulations based on this model it is shown that the extraction efficiency can be increased by a factor of more than two for moderate tapers in the dielectric layers.
