Abstract

We have measured the Meissner (flux expulsion) effects, lower critical fields, Hc1, and magnetization curves in single-crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y (idealized composition) in magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the basal planes. We find that the Meissner flux expulsion fractions of these crystals are very large, reaching 57-74% (depending on field orientation) of that of an ideal superconductor. The lower critical fields are very small (≤100 G in the favorable orientation) and show a large anisotropy of 25. The magnetization critical current has also been determined to be ~6×104 A/cm2 at 7 K.
